Recap of the November 8th meeting and December Social (sorry, no social in December)

In November our meeting was focused on simple sewing and quilting gifts for the holidays.  We had tote bags, pillow covers and stockings.  Here is a picture of Debby West and the beautiful stockings she made for her grandchildren.

We also had two people that brought ornaments to swap. Take a look at the snowflake ornaments.  One crocheted and one tatted.

A few things to note, Brooke one of the Co-Secretaries has stepped down, Pam has stepped down as Treasurer and Brenda, the President and Founder of this group is stepping down at the end of the year from the President’s position.  Cheryl the Vice President will begin leading the group and there are exciting things to come!  To keep our current blog for historical purposes it will still be active, however you’ll need to start following a new blog:  http://www.greenvillemodernquiltguild.blogspot.com  Make sure you sign up for the updates via email on this new site.

We will be having our (hopefully) annual December social on December 13th. It will be great fun to hang out with other quilters and talk about the fun and exciting upcoming year!

Where: On the Border (74 Beacon Dr., Greenville, SC 29615)

Please RSVP to Cheryl Brickey at cheryljbrickey (at) gmail (dot) com to get an accurate count or reply to the December social post over on the new website (not on this website). http://www.greenvillemodernquiltguild.blogspot.com.

There will not be a December social.  Enjoy the holidays and we hope to see you January 2015.

Reminder – November 8th Meeting

November’s meeting will be at Bernina this coming Saturday the 8th from 1-3 pm.

At this meeting, we are going to have a fun ornament exchange.  If you would like to participate simply bring in a handmade ornament.  Any ornament at all, preferably one that contains fabric.

Our topic for the November meeting is simple sewing and quilting gifts for the holidays.  If you have any ideas please them to show the group.  You do not have to do a demo, you can just talk through the process.  Last year we had some wonderful gifts shown such as scarves, hot plates, and fabric Christmas trees.  You can also show or describe how you made your swap ornament.

See you Saturday!

Recap of October 11th Meeting

Our October 11th meeting focused on a half square triangle (HST) program.

We had a great number of show and shares, both regular and HST quilts.  We then discussed over 7 different ways to make HST and then different tips and notions to make the marking, sewing, and trimming of HST easier and quicker.  Here are some of the wonderful show and shares:

Recap of the September 13th, 2014 meeting

Our September meeting’s program was focused on favorite notions or tools for quilting with an emphasis on notions that were not originally developed for sewing applications.

We had wonderful participation with most members bringing one or many different tools to show and discuss. We saw everything from marking pens, rulers, ways to test and catalog different quilting styles and machine settings, fabric storage ideas, carrying cases, and scissors. While a good number of the notions were purchased in a sewing or quilting store, many of the notions came from non-sewing stores such as hardware stores and general stores like Target. It was a lot of fun to learn about all of the different tools and find out new uses for some notions not typically associated with quilting or sewing.

We also had a great show and share with Patrice, Debby, and Cheryl showing quilts and a needlebook.

Thank you all who came to the September meeting, especially those who brought notions to share!  We will see you in October for a program on half square triangles.

September meeting: the 13th from 1-3

Just your reminder that this month’s meeting will be at Bernina this coming Saturday the 13th of September from 1-3. We are sorry the last few months have all been in varying spots. This was due to the unavailability of our usual time at Bernina for one month followed by our semi-annual library sewing Saturday meeting. We make sure to update you via the blog regarding our meeting times and places so as long as you check this space out you are sure to be good to go!
This month’s topic is your favorite sewing tool. We are looking for lots of group input on this one so be sure to bring your favorite sewing tool or accessory and tell us all about it! Hoping we all go home with some fun ideas for new tools to use! Also we are especially wanting to know if you have a non-quilting related accessory- like something you found at the hardware store, for example!
See you all on Saturday!

Pelham Road Library – Sewing Saturday – Aug 9

Bernina Sewing Center sent out an email for their National Clearance Sale, included in the email was a note that we (Greenville Modern Quilt Guild) would be meeting there this Saturday. WE ARE NOT MEETING AT BERNINA THIS SATURDAY! We WILL be meeting at the Pelham Road Library (see previous post). Sorry for the confusion, hope to see you there (at the library)!

NOTE: Bernina has already been contacted and aware we will NOT be meeting there August 9th.

July Meeting- Insights into the Fabric Design Industry

Our quilt guild meeting this month was held at a cool, new venue called Due South Coffee Roasters. There were some new faces this month and we are always excited to meet and welcome new people to our group. The atmosphere was wonderful; however, the acoustics were a little louder than expected. We will be working with the Due South staff to see if we can utilize one of their meeting rooms in the future.

Congratulations to Paige and Cheryl! They are finalists in the modern quilt category in the AQS show which takes place in Charlotte next month.

Several people shared quilts and quilt related items this month. Cheryl and Paige showed us their Michael Miller Challenge quilts. They did a fabulous job on those! Debbie showed us an adorable quilt made for her grandchild from animal fabrics. Christa showed us an Aztec inspired crib quilt made with Indian Summer fabrics and a paper pieced arrow pillow.

After show and tell, Tim Reynolds, who is a fabric designer and textile artist from Fabric Editions right here in Greenville, shared with us the ins and outs of working in the textile industry. He brought a lot of samples with him and had a printed handout with examples of how the fabric is stretched onto rollers and printed. Of course, since we all are fabric addicts, it was a very intriguing lecture and we all learned a lot. We appreciate him relinquishing a few hours on his busy Saturday to come and speak with us!

Stay tuned for details on our sew Saturday at the library next month. Details will be posted soon on times and library location. Our September meeting is all about sharing your favorite quilting tool, so be thinking of what awesome tool that you can’t live without that you would like to bring and share!001 004 008 010 011 012 015 016 018 019
